Professional Development for School Teachers and Staff

We want to empower teachers and administrators with language about disability and the tools needed to meet students where they are so that students can achieve their greatest potential. To achieve this goal, we offer three different professional development courses to schools. The topics and objectives are listed below:

  • Disability Awareness, Inclusion and Sensitivity:
    • Participants will be able to identify at least three common misconceptions about disability.
    • Participants will be able to list at least two benefits of inclusion.
    • Participants will be able to name two strategies for discussing developmental, behavioral and educational concerns.
  • Disability-Inclusive and Accessible Classrooms:
    • Participants will be able to define inclusion and accessible.
    • Participants will be able to identify strategies to create disability-inclusive and accessible classrooms using environmental modifications.
    • Participants will identify at least two environmental modifications they can make in their current classroom.
  • Disability-Inclusive and Accessible Schools:

Testimonial

The program has not only impacted my teaching but also the lives of my kindergarteners. Learning ways to foster more inclusive classroom environments has encouraged my students to critically think about our friends with disabilities, both visible and invisible, and form meaningful relationships with them in and out of the classroom. We have been exposed to many books and activities through [the program] and Disability Awareness Week that have helped promote friendship, kindness, and respect for all learners!
