5 Tips for Back to School Success for Students with Disabilities
The return to school can be an exciting—but often overwhelming—time for families, especially when you’re navigating additional layers like IEPs. Luckily, some thoughtful planning and preparation can go a long way in setting your student up for success.
Here are five essential tips that can help make the transition a little smoother.
1. Prepare for Health &
Medical Needs
Back-to-school season isn't just about school supplies. For many families, it's also about ensuring health and medical needs are updated and accessible. Think: paperwork, medications, supplies, and making sure the school nurse is in the loop.
2. start at home
Shifting from summer to school mode takes intention. The key? Start at home! Build morning routines, practice school schedules and tasks, and create a homework station. These small practices at home can create a sense of confidence, predictability, and security for your student.
3. Create a Student Fact Sheet
No one knows your student like you do. A student fact sheet is a simple, proactive tool that introduces your child—beyond their diagnosis—to the educators and professionals who will be working with them. It’s a great tool to hand off at meetings and back to school events.
4. Maximize Meet the Teacher
These events are golden opportunities to connect—not just with teachers, but also with therapists, aides, transportation and front office staff. Knowing who’s on your child’s team and sharing helpful tools, like your Student Fact Sheet, can set your student up for success!
5. master the IEP
IEPs can be dense, but they don’t have to be overwhelming. Review goals, accommodations, behavior plans, and previous progress reports and make sure you feel confident advocating for what’s written. This is also a great time to identify anything that might need adjusting.
